These cats usually live about 10 years in the wild and about 20 years in zoos. The females have 3-4 cubs and the kittens are born blind. They drink their mother's milk until 8 weeks and do not start hunting until they are 1.5 years old. They reach full maturity at 3-4 years old. Like all felines, they are solitary and territorial and maintain home ranges. Males have much larger domains than females, and several females usually dwell within one male's home range and make up a sort of harem for the dominant male.

This is one of the largest and strongest cats that live on Earth. Males are usually bigger than females and weigh 419-569 pounds, whereas females weigh 221-353 pounds. Males are 105-125 inches long and females are 95-105 inches long. They have orange coats crossed with dark stripes. As long as they dwell in areas where seasonal weather changes are quite palpable, their coat can change color, being bright red in summer and turning paler in winter.
