Now there are about 5000 species that live in the wild now. The Amur subspecies is highly endangered and is running the risk of disappearance in a couple of decades. These animals are hunted for pelts, whiskers and their body parts that are used extensively in Asiatic folk medicines. There are about 200 wild representatives of this subspecies and about 250 animals in captivity.
