Siberian Tigers - Reproduction

The breeding season of Siberian Tigers is restricted to winter months and the cubs are born in relatively warm time of the year. The average litter consists of 3-4 babies that are born blind and helpless and weigh about 2 pounds. At the age of 8 weeks they are introduced to meat and become able to follow their mother and learn the hunting technique from her.

Females often bring live animals for the cubs to practice and play. Young Tigers are able to hunt independently at about 1.5 years of age, but leave the mother at 2-2.5 years of age. Siberian Tigers reach sexual maturity at 3-4 years. The usual lifespan of this species is 15 years, but in captivity they live longer.

Siberian Tigers - Evolution

All Tigers are descendants of a marten-like animal called the miacidae that lived during the Cretaceous period, about 70-65 million years ago. These animals were pure carnivores and had 44 teeth and strong flexible limbs. Siberian Tigers evolved in Asia that is proved by fossils found in China and Siberia. Modern Tigers are not the descendants of the Saber-toothed Tiger, which is an animal of an evolutionary dead-end.

Siberian Tigers - Habits

Like most cats, Siberian Tigers are solitary animals. Their home ranges are very large (up to 50 sq. miles for dominating males), especially in areas where food is scarce. Sometimes the Siberian Tiger will gather together with others to share a large kill. Siberian Tigers are primarily nocturnal, but can be seen in daytime during the winter.
